How are you feeling now as the Christmas and New Year’s festivities are over?
Are you relieved that you entered the new decade with 2020 leaving behind the past year or are you feeling a tinge of sadness that your excitement, joy, and wonder from the magic of the holiday season have passed?
Did you set your goals or resolutions for the new year? Or you didn’t because too many times you were not able to follow through on your commitment to yourself?
Eunjung and I have been traveling in Egypt in the past month and spent Christmas and the New Year in the land of the ancient temples and sacred sites. During the last week of 2019 in Egypt, I looked back on the past decade and reflected upon the many blessings, miracles, challenges and difficulties it brought all in equal measure.
I also got a glimpse of memories of how I experienced these special days when I was still a boy. After the holidays with family and friends were over, I felt sad to go back to school and return to ordinary daily routines. Many years later when I became more aware it is possible to continue experiencing the magic of the Holyday season, I started to look for ways how I could maintain a spark of celebration in my heart:
  • Integrating holiday values such as gratitude, appreciation, generosity, and forgiveness in your all-day experiences.
  • Finding ways to volunteer for something you are passionate about.
  • Connecting more often with loved ones or friends you normally only see a few times or less a year in a meaningful way.
  • Keeping one piece of decoration displayed as a reminder to stay cheerful and in gratitude.
  • Treating yourself and others with something to help you and them to further enhance your well-being.
This New Years’ Eve, after Eunjung and I had completed a 2-weeks group journey with heart-centered soul adventurers through ancient temples and pyramids along the Nile which culminated in our 2-hour private visit to the Great Pyramid, we stayed in a very basic guesthouse on the Sinai Peninsula near the St. Catherine’s Monastery located at the base of Mount Sinai.
After a celebratory Egyptian dinner, we retreated to our small room early and shared with each other what and who we are grateful for the past decade and counted the blessings and miracles we received along our journey together. Afterwards, we both wrote down our journal what we want to let go of and what we intend to create and experience in the new year.
We knew what we wanted to do on the first day of the new decade – hike up to the top of Mount Sinai to meditate and set the sacred space for us for the coming year. I wanted to climb for the sunrise, however Eunjung who already had hiked Mount Sinai twice before persuaded me for the sunset hike because at night the temperature can drop below zero and you will see a lot more people on the top at sunrise than sunset.
So on January 1, we arranged a guide for the afternoon hike to experience the first sunset of the new decade on Mount Sinai instead of climbing up super early morning like most visitors and tour groups for the sunrise. We were surprisingly met by a young 15-year-old guide ‘Mustafa’. He was a Bedouin boy who lives in the area and had lots of energy and walked up the winding trail seemingly effortless like a mountain goat.
Toward the end of the hike, another guide joined us. One kitty started to follow us along the 750 steps which is the last challenging portion of the climb. It followed us all the way from the base of the steps to the mountain top and seemed to encourage us to keep going. It is remarkable how often we meet an animal guide at sacred sites who reminds us that we are never alone and always guided in our path.
While we hiked up that afternoon, clouds were gathering and the sky looked gray, and I got increasingly doubtful that we would see any sunset. Eunjung reminded me that things can change unexpectedly and miracles happen. Once we reached the mountain top at an elevation of 2285 meters about 45 minutes before the sunset time, we felt exhausted and it was pretty cold. We could see there were about 12 – 15 pilgrims enjoying the view.
Expansive and impressive mountain ranges were in front of us but with lack of light, everything looked a bit dull. After taking some pictures of the mountain with a bit of sunlight shining through the clouds, we sat down behind rocks and meditated. As we started the meditation, I could start feeling the powerful, sacred energies of the place.
We connected the potent energies from Mt Sinai and the surrounding areas with all of the sacred sites, vortexes and portals we had visited and worked with during the last decade with the intention of helping to create a harmonious and peaceful field around the planet. It was such a peaceful and joyous experience to have on the first day of the new decade.
Afterwards, we noticed that everyone had left and we also started our descend. Before our meditation, we had told our young Bedouin guide to wait for us at the first resting place below the mountain top. However, when we arrived at the meeting place, we were told by one of his friends that Mustafa was still up on the mountain top. I decided to climb back up the 150 stairs to go find him while Eunjung was waiting below.

Once I reached the top, I called for him but I realized that there was absolutely no one else except me. That very moment the clouds shifted, the sky opened and I was basked in radiant multi-color solar rays. It was as if I were dreaming. There are no words with which I could describe that moment and how I felt. I made a short video and posted it on my YouTube page -> https://youtu.be/dktoLb_tHHw.

Right when the sun was going down and I was about to finish the video recording, I heard Mustafa calling me. He had climbed back up too to come find me. That moment I remembered again the time when I was still at the same age like him. I was grateful that through his company, I experienced the entire hike with child-like wonder and an open heart.
Mustafa and I made our way down to meet with Eunjung who also had seen the glorious sunset from where she was. We started to hike down the mountain together. After about half an hour, it got completely dark and we kept walking down the trail in silence with flashlights and without anyone else around us. It was a monumental experience we are very grateful for.
By sharing experiences from our sacred journeys, I wish to send inspiring and uplifting messages to those of you who read these words and see the images when there are so many news of despair and heart-breaking events around the world.
Despite what seem to be dark and gray at the moment, I believe miracles do happen and events can turn around and radiant light will shine upon all of us again to guide us in the right path. And we are the active co-participants in manifesting miracles by believe in them.
Lastly, I would like to share what you can do yourself to create miracles in your life for the new year and the new decade:
  • Count your blessings; experiences or people in your life you are grateful for, either by yourself or get a gratitude buddy to go over them.
  • Write down what you want to let go of in a paper and what you wish to create in another paper.
  • Spend solitary time and walk in nature off the beaten path. Remain in silence as much as possible and listen.
  • Do a simple ritual with what you have written down, for example:
    • Burn the paper (safely) containing what you want to let go of.
    • Bury the paper containing your intentions in the earth.
    • Visualize how you would feel if what you have written down all came true.
  • Remain grateful, open your heart, be receptive to synchronicities guiding you along the way.
Wishing you a wonderous year filled with love, good health, happiness, well-being, abundance and peace on earth!
